Well, I finally cut the last cord to a regular phone line. I installed a Vonage VoIP system in my home last night, and despite the somewhat unfriendly Linksys directions (not really made for someone with a wireless network), it’s up and running. It sounds great, and so far I’ve had no delays in sound. When I called the help line to figure out why the directions insisted I needed a second ethernet cord (which I didn’t), the agent told me in passing that he only uses dial-up at home. He said he doesn’t really want broadband because he only uses the Internet to book travel. Interesting that a guy who doesn’t really use the Net is working at a help desk at a VoIP firm. Just goes to show you that even if people don’t have home Net access, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are being left out of the digital revolution as some digital divide crusaders like to pretend.
