The Future of Communications

I was the keynote speaker for the California Telephone Association’s (CTA) annual conference this year. CTA’s members are mostly small phone companies from around the state. It was interesting to listen to their thoughts about how their small businesses might survive all the changes going on in the telecommunications sector. Here’s a column that summarizes some of what I said in my talk.

Sonia: Great column! If government would just get out of the way, many “crises” would never materialize. I recall the CA energy debacle which started when the CA PUC refused to allow PGE to enter into long-term contracts to lock-in reasonably priced power. Despite all the furor over the subsequent aspects of the energy crisis, that initial obstacle placed by government ended up causing the crisis to begin with. Again, kudos on your articulate explanation of the the problem and the common-sense solutions. — Lance Izumi
